KOLLAM: Officials of the Commercial Taxes Department failed to complete a raid on jewellery shops in Karunagapally town on Tuesday, due to strong protests from traders. Traders in the town downed shutters in protest. The raid was part of a State-wide exercise by the Department.

As soon as the officials entered one shop, gold merchants under the banner of the All Kerala Gold and Silver Merchants Association barged into it and began raising slogans against the department. Other shops could not be raided because they had kept the shutters down.

Five arrested

The police arrested five members of the association, including its district president, S. Abdul Nazar, on the charge of preventing government personnel from discharging their duties. Mr. Nazar said jewellery shops in the district would observe a hartal on Wednesday.
