Delay in MGNREGS fund allocation
KALPETTA: Presidents of the grama panchayats ruled by the Left Democratic Front in Wayanad district staged a sit-in in front of the office of the Joint Programme Coordinator of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) here in protest against the alleged delay by the Union government in allotting funds for the scheme in the district. C.K. Saseendran, district secretary, Communist Party of India (Marxist) inaugurated the protest in which 18 of the 25 panchayat presidents took part. If the authorities do not provide the fund within one week, the panchayat members would take out a march to the panchayat offices in the district, the organisers said.
Meanwhile, M.I. Shanavas, MP, said that the agitation was a politically motivated one. He said fund allotment was delayed because panchayat authorities had not submitted the expenditure statement, utilisation certificate and audit report of the MGNREGS work, worth Rs.24 lakh, during 2007-08.
