Villagers’ collective to take out march on Tuesday

The Karapuzha All-Party Action Council, a collective of villagers in the area, will take out a march to the office of the Karapuzha Irrigation Project at Karapuzha on Tuesday raising various demands.

The council had been seeking steps to prevent the water in the reservoir from getting polluted due to the use of fertilizers and chemicals in the farms in the catchment area of the reservoir.

Speaking to mediapersons here on Friday, council chairman V.P. Varkey said the mushrooming of private resorts in the area was also posing a threat to the waterbody.

Many resorts were being constructed in violation of norms. The solid and liquid wastes from these resorts were not being processed and treated properly, he said. The drinking water schemes which draw water from the reservoir would also be affected, he said.

The unscientific removal of earth using heavy machines from the catchment would jeopardise the eco-system. This would cause soil erosion during monsoon and the soil thus deposited in the reservoir would reduce storage, Mr. Varkey said.

The march would also urge the authorities to provide basic amenities to tourists visiting the place.
