The ecological balance of a region should be taken into consideration while we think of development and town planning, Minister for Social Welfare and Panchayats M.K. Muneer has said.

Inaugurating a seminar on ‘wetland management and maintenance’ organised by the Kerala State Land Use Board here on Saturday, he said citizens should be aware of the protection of natural resources at a time when villages were getting urbanised fast.

Attempts should be made to prepare a resource map for city corporations just like those in panchayats and municipalities, he added.

The Minister appreciated the Land Use Board in ensuring that the available land was put to proper use for projects on food security, solving ecological problems, forestry, town planning and industry.

He said working projects based on wetlands could be used for proper implementation of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme and projects for agricultural development. He also urged that the services of organisations such as Kudumbasree shall be used in the wetland management process.
