Leader of the Opposition V.S. Achuthanandan has demanded further investigation to find out the truth about the Suryanelli victim’s disclosure that some more bigwigs were involved in the case.

Welcoming the Supreme Court’s order quashing the Kerala High Court’s acquittal of all but one of the accused in the case, Mr. Achuthanandan said the apex court’s decision was a blow to the attempts by the accused and the State government to prolong the trial before it under various ruses. The Supreme Court’s intervention in the matter was a major relief, he said.

In a separate statement, CPI(M) State secretary Pinarayi Vijayan said the Supreme Court verdict was ‘a slap on UDF government’s face’. The accused in the case were able to escape punishment only because of the support given by the last UDF government. There should be a comprehensive probe into the attempts to subvert the case and the misuse of official machinery to save the accused, Mr. Vijayan said.

Welcoming the verdict, BJP State unit president V. Muraleedharan said it was a warning for the State government.

CPI State secretary Pannian Ravindran hoped that the judiciary would view the Supreme Court verdict seriously and make appropriate corrections. The government and the police should at least now be ready to take the case forward in all its seriousness.
