KOCHI: Private bus workers in the city, under the banner of Private Bus Thozhilali Federation (AITUC) would strike work on May 13, 14, to protest against what they termed as police harassment following the spree of recent accidents involving private buses.
“We are not against the police initiating action against bus workers who violate rules. But very often, they begin to chargesheet workers en masse, without verifying whether they are at fault,” said the federation general secretary Joy Joseph.
Referring to the incident in which a bus driver was arrested and imprisoned for a fortnight a few days ago on the charge of kicking and smashing the windscreen of a goods autorickshaw, Mr. Joseph alleged that the incident is still shrouded in mystery.
Both the federation and the Jilla Motor Thozhilali Union (INTUC) have been alleging that bus owners lure the workers into driving rashly, by paying them collection batta.
