Private buses will stay off the road as part of an indefinite strike from December 18, office-bearers of the Bus Operators Coordination Committee have said.

Committee chairman T. Gopinathan told mediapersons after a meeting of the organisation here on Wednesday that the strike was to press for their long-standing demands.

The demands included an increase in fare; a solution to discrepancies in students’ concession; tax rebate on diesel for buses, and an end to the discriminatory attitude of the Transport Department to private bus operators, he said.

The office-bearers would meet Chief Minister Oommen Chandy and Transport Minister Aryadan Mohammed ahead of the strike to apprise them of the situation. Committee convener M. Gokuldas said a convention of bus operators would be held in Kochi on December 9. Representatives of trade unions in the transport sector would also take part in it, he said.
