KANNUR: A murder convict undergoing life sentence has escaped from the Central Jail here. Police stations in the district and neighbouring areas have been alerted to nab the missing convict.

The prisoner has been identified as P.K. Deepak (27), who had been undergoing life imprisonment since 2003. He got away from Block 7, presumably late on Wednesday night or in the early hours of Thursday, where he had been sheltered along with 50-odd jail inmates.

Jail officials said that Deepak, hailing from Thiruvambadi in Kozhikode, escaped by removing the roof tiles of the block. He apparently joined dhotis of other inmates together and used it to climb up the wall and remove the roof tiles.

The jail authorities said he was found missing in the morning when they examined the ward. They said that he could have escaped when the other inmates were in sound sleep. The district police have started investigation into the incident.
