Muslims across the State will celebrate Id-ul-Fitr on Sunday marking the culmination of the month-long fasting during Ramzan. The new moon was sighted at Kozhikode beach on Saturday evening, heralding the Islamic month of Shawwaal.
All Kazis across the State, including Syed Hyderali Shihab Thangal, Kanthapuram A.P. Aboobacker Musliar, and Cherusseri Zainuddin Musliar, confirmed the sighting of the new moon.
Refrains of ‘Allahu Akbarullahu’ rose from mosques across the State soon after the announcement of Id-ul-Fitr came around 7.30 p.m. People busied themselves by giving away the mandatory Fitr Zakat.
When Sunnis preferred to distribute rice to the poor individually, non-Sunni sections such as Salafi and Jamaat groups chose to give away the Fitr Zakat collectively.
People were seen rushing to markets to buy meat and vegetables for Id-ul-Fitr feast. Poultry shops as well as beef stalls witnessed heavy rush on Saturday night. Id prayers will be held on Sunday morning at all mosques and Id Gahs.
Non-Sunni groups prefer to perform Id prayers at Id Gahs set up in towns, majority Sunnis prefer to perform the special mass prayers in mosques.
C.P. Khalid Ansari will lead the prayer at the Id Gah at Tirur Stadium Grounds at 7.30 a.m. Kunhimohammed Panangangara will lead the prayers at Mujahid Mosque, Malappuram, at 7.45 a.m. Rahmatulla Khasimi Moothedam will lead the prayer at Mampad Puthanpalli mosque at 8 a.m.
K.T. Mansoor will lead the prayers at the Id Gah at Ace Public School, Manjeri, at 8 a.m. Hameedali Aroor will lead the prayer at Id Gah at Puthoor Pallikkal at 8 a.m. Salafi leader Husain Madavoor will lead the prayers at Id Gah near Ponnani Fishing Harbour at 8.15 a.m.
