KOZHIKODE: The Kozhikode-based non-governmental organisation (NGO) Oleena Mahila Samajam has achieved the distinction of selling the largest number of Jeevan Mangal, micro insurance policy of the Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) of India, in the country. Oleena has sold 10,051 Jeevan Mangal policies since its launch on September 3.

Sujatha T., chairperson, Oleena Mahila Samajam, was felicitated by V.K. Sharma, Zonal Manager (south zone), LIC, at LIC’s Chennai zonal office on Monday, a spokesperson said. By promoting Jeevan Mangal, Oleena has provided direct employment to more than 800 women. Another 490 women have been indirectly employed.

More than 58,000 below poverty line (BPL) families have been enrolled in Jeevan Madhur, another micro insurance product, and nearly 10,000 families in the Jeevan Mangal scheme, Ms. Sujatha said.

Oleena has been arranging training programmes for youth from BPL families under the Smile Twin e-learning programme, that enhances the employability of youth by teaching them soft skills. This year the Smile Foundation, which floated the project, aims to train 100 girls.

As a special study centre of Indira Gandhi National Open University, Oleena has been conducting computer learning programme for the inmates of the district jail. It will soon extend this programme to jails in Thrissur and Kannur.
