KOCHI: The Ernakulam District Committee of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) has demanded the removal of police officers involved in the alleged torture of a Dalit youth in Njarakkal.

C. M. Devasi, general secretary of the district committee of the party, said here that a few police officers at the Njarakkal station had taken E. K. Manesh, youth wing member of the party, into illegal custody on January 18 in connection with an alleged theft case. He accused the police personnel of having tortured the youth while in custody.

Mr. Devasi said that Vinson Paul, IGP, Ernakulam Range, had ordered an inquiry and later found that the youth was innocent.
