Lalur residents were protesting against the dumping of garbage
Thrissur: The police on Wednesday removed Lalur Malineekarana Virudha Samara Samithy members who blockaded the vehicles transporting garbage to the dump yard. The symbolic wall built by the agitators was removed by the police. Later, garbage collected from the city was disposed at the yard with police protection.
As part of their ongoing agitation against the City Corporation’s alleged ineptitude in solving the Lalur issue, Samara Samithy members sat at the entrance of the road leading to the dump yard. Writer Sara Joseph inaugurated the agitation.
“This is Lalur resident’s fight for the right to live.
The children of the Lalur should not be denied their right to fresh air and pure drinking water,” she said.
Tension prevailed in the area when a lorry carrying waste allegedly tried to drive into the samara pantal.
The Samara Samithy leaders alleged that the Corporation authorities were trying to create unnecessary tension during their peaceful protest. The relay sathyagraha would be continued until the corporation found a lasting solution for the issue, they said.
Meanwhile, the Samara Samithy took out a torchlight procession on Wednesday night protesting against the police action. It would observe a ‘black day’ on Thursday.
