A month after the murder of an aged woman at Vattakkinar, near Government Arts and Science College here, a team of the city police and the Crime Branch that is carrying out a joint probe is still in the dark about the identity of the killer.

The victim, 69-year-old Sundariamma, who was living alone, was hacked to death by an unidentified person inside her house around 1.30 a.m. on July 21.

Migrant worker

Preliminary investigation suggested that the suspect could be a migrant worker who had attacked the woman with sharp weapons during a burglary attempt. Gold ornaments and Rs.6,500 in Sundariamma’s possession were found intact in the house.

G. Sparjankumar, Commissioner of Police, Kozhikode city, who is monitoring the probe, said here on Wednesday that the results of fingerprints and forensic analysis did not yield any solid clues to the identity of the killer.

Circumstantial evidence

“Now, we will have to depend on some of the circumstantial evidence to nab the culprit. The investigators suspect a few persons, including some of the neighbours in the locality. The motive for the crime also needs to be established,” he said.

Sundariamma who lived in Chirakkal Lane used to make a living by selling homemade snacks, idli, and dosa to small hotels and migrant labourers in the area.

Her married daughters stayed elsewhere. She ran a petty money-lending business among the workers for some time.

Investigators said the killer had entered her house through the roof after removing the clay tiles.

Bamboo poles found near the house had been used to reach the top, indicating that the killer was familiar with the area.

A team comprising Kasaba Circle Inspector P. Pramod and officers attached to the Crime Branch (Hurt and Homicide Wing) is conducting the investigation.

So far, the case has not been transferred to the Crime Branch. Generally, grievous crimes such as murder are handed over to the Crime Branch if the local police fail to nab the culprit within 48 hours.

However, the Deputy Inspector General of Police (Kannur range) has to take a decision in this regard.

The alleged laxity on the part of the police in nabbing the killer is making the other two families living in the lane anxious.
