THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala Police has set up a hi-tech cell to trace originators of objectionable election campaign messages transmitted through the short message service (SMS) of mobile phones.

The Kerala Police Alert No. 9846100100 will receive complaints, about such SMS, orally given by any person. Another special mobile number +9846034127 will receive any objectionable SMS forwarded by the complainant. Both the phones will function round the clock till the completion of the election process. The police will take appropriate action under the relevant provisions of the Indian Penal Code,

Representation of the People Act, 1951; the Conduct of Election Rules 1961 or any other law applicable against the originator of such objectionable SMS messages, an official release said.

Code violation

The Election Commission of India had imposed restrictions on use of SMS for electioneering as actions in contravention of the model code of conduct and election rules had come to its notice. Some interested parties had been sending derogatory messages in disregard to the code of conduct, election rules and directives of the Commission. Hence, the Commission had directed the police to maintain special mobile numbers to receive complaints and information on such messages.
