Kozhikode: Niravu, a residents' association of 101 families in Vengeri, has demanded the immediate plugging of leaks in the Poolakadavu bund and steps to bring water to the Poolakadavu-Puthiyangadi canal.

Niravu secretary P.P. Ramanathan said water through the Poolakadavu-Puthiyangadi canal could solve water shortage experienced in areas like Kannadikkal, Vengeri and Karuvissery. Agriculture had suffered due to lack of water in these places, Mr. Ramanathan said.

The Poolakadavu-Puthiyangadi canal is part of the Kuttiady Irrigation Scheme, but it has been five years since water was let into the canal. While leakages and repairs needed for the Kuttiady canal was the reason until 2008 for water not being let in to the canal, since 2009 water from the Kuttiady canal was diverted from Poolakadavu to the Poonoor river for drinking water needs of the Kerala Water Authority by constructing a bund at Poolakadavu. The bund has now developed seepage since timely repairs were not done. Most of the water drains into the sea. “This is a big wastage especially during summer, when this water could have helped sustain areas facing water shortage,” he said.
