KANNUR: The North Malabar Railway Users’ Forum (NMRUF) has demanded revising the quota system for the Mangalore-Thiruvananthapuram Maveli Express.

Welcoming the Southern Railway’s decision to run the Maveli Express as daily train with revised timings from September 16, NMRUF president K.P. Sreedharan and general secretary P. Natarajan said that the train would be preferred by large number of passengers from Kanhangad to Tirur. But most of about 500 berths earmarked as quota were allotted for passengers starting journey from stations between Mangalore and Kanhangad, they said.

For passengers beyond Kanhangad, the number of berths allotted was only about 50, the NMRUF officer-bearers said.

The NMRUF in its representation to the Southern Railway general manager said that most of the berths allotted to the Mangalore side would go unutilised and the wait list would reach its limit very early itself for those booking from stations like Kannur and Kozhikode.

The NMRUF urged the authorities either to withdraw the quota system or allot 300 berths for passengers from stations between Kanhangad and Tirur.
