The Joint Council of State Service Organisations has urged the government to raise the retirement age of government employees and teachers from the present 55 years. In a statement here on Sunday, the council asked the government not to withdraw the present practice of allowing employees to retire on the same date at the end of the financial year unless the retirement age was raised. The government would have nearly Rs.3,600 crore in the treasury if the retirement age was raised. This amount could be used to create new employment opportunities for the youth. The government could discuss this side of the issue with the youth organisations for their support for raising the retirement age, the statement said. — Special Correspondent
