Deesheeya Karshaka Samajam has demanded the State government to declare the district as drought affected since the agriculture sector is facing a crisis due to water shortage.

In a statement here on Sunday, the Samajam general secretary Muthalamthode Mani said there were problems in the first crop of paddy due to the shortage of irrigation water.

Now it was the season for sowing of the second crop of paddy, but there was no water available to undertake the paddy cultivation operations.

The Irrigation Department authorities had already informed the farmers that there was no water in half a dozen reservoirs like Malampuzha, Meenkara, Chulliyar, Pothundy, Walayar etc. in the district for releasing water for the second crop of paddy cultivation. In this situation, the farmers would be forced to abandon the second crop of paddy cultivation in the district.

The drought situation had also affected other crops in the district like banana and vegetable cultivation, the statement said.
