KOLLAM: The Elephant Lovers’ Association has sought the intervention of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in saving the wildlife of the State from unauthorised electric fences along plantations bordering forest areas.

A petition in this connection was faxed by the association to Mr. Singh who is also the Chairman of the Wildlife Board of India.

Association secretary V.K. Venkatachalam said in the petition that at least six wild elephants and three leopards had got electrocuted by such unauthorised fences.

An elephant was electrocuted on Sunday at Nagamala, near Thenmala, in Kollam district.

The association alleged that Forest personnel often turned a blind eye to such fencing.

Almost all such fences were across wildlife corridors. Such fences are against the Wildlife Protection Act, the association pointed out.
