Islamic scholar and general secretary of the Indian Islamic Movement Hussain Madavoor has called for a referendum on prohibition.

Though prohibition was a constitutional obligation, it was shocking to note that liquor was controlling life across the nation.

Until liquor was banned, the nation could not be considered to have won independence, Mr. Hussain said here on Wednesday.

Inaugurating a dharna organised by Kerala Madhyanirodhana Samithi in front of the Civil Station here on Tuesday, Mr. Hussain said that religion, faith, and worship would not survive if liquor was not banned.

The demonstration was to press for immediate closure of 101 toddy shops which were selling adulterated toddy.

The demonstrators alleged that the government order to close down these toddy shops had not been implemented.
