THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The roads division of the State Public Works Department is using, on an experimental basis, a bitumen mixture containing shredded plastic waste for laying a one-km stretch of road from Chavadimukku to Gandhipuram in the capital city.

The feasibility of using such a mixture to lay roads has been studied jointly by the Kerala Highway Research Institute and a team from the College of Engineering, Thiruvananthapuram. The project has the backing of the State Planning Board.

As per this technique, shredded plastic waste is first mixed with aggregate substances before being added to the bitumen. This will enhance the life of the bitumen, initial studies have found. Public Works Minister M.K. Muneer inaugurated the project on January 18.
