Tenders to replace pipeline to be issued today

: A pipe-burst that sent water gushing up to the third storey of a house at Patthamkallu, near Nedumangad, late Saturday has finally prompted the Kerala Water Authority (KWA) to speed up its move to replace the pipeline in the area, with tenders to be issued for laying of new pipes across a 5.5-km stretch at an estimated cost of Rs.10 crore.

A senior official of the KWA said the work was expected to be completed within six months. Tenders would be issued on Monday. This would put an end to regular pipe-bursts and leaks in the region, he said.

The incident, which put the KWA on alert mode, occurred at midnight on Saturday when the pipe burst and water gushed into a house located on a lower level than the pipe, and in no time surged up to the third floor. Occupants of the house were rescued by the local people, but electronic appliances and other household goods costing lakhs of rupees were reported to be damaged.

According to a KWA official who visited the spot on Sunday, restoration of water supply in the region, which covers most parts of Vattappara as well, would be completed by Tuesday. The tenders to be issued on Monday would be for laying of 500-mm ductile iron pipes instead of the existing concrete pipe for 5.5 km. The proposal to replace the pipes had been pending for quite some time now, but finally got moving after Saturday’s incident, though KWA officials say the tenders would in any case have been issued in the forthcoming week.

Maintenance work that began at the Aruvikkara treatment plant on Saturday had been completed and water supply was being restored in a phased manner, officials said. The work, which continued till noon on Sunday, had affected supply to areas under the Pattoor, Palayam and Kowdiar sections, including Vellayambalam, Sasthamangalam, Vazhuthacaud, Thycaud, Jagathy, Palayam, Statue, Overbridge, Bakery Junction, Murinjapalam, Thekkummoodu, Vanchiyoor, Pattoor, Chaka, Kannammoola, Gourisapattom, Kunnukuzhy, Shangumugham, Veli, Plammoodu, PMG, Pettah, Valiyathura, Airport, Thumba, Kesavadasapuram, Pattom, Kumarapuram, Burma Road, Jawahar Nagar, Mannanthala, Kudappanakunnu as well.
