Manipulation alleged in land utilisation
PATHANAMTHITTA: Road development work as part of the Kerala State Transport Project on MC Road at Kulanada, near Pandalam, hit a roadblock following opposition from the public on Monday.
Local people and grama panchayat authorities blocked the road work alleging manipulation by contractors in utilising the land acquired by the government for the road development project.
Local people alleged that the contractors were not utilising the land earmarked for road widening at Kulanada in the original plan prepared by the KSTP with a view to protecting the interests of a few land owners.
The work was blocked by a group of local people led by panchayat president G.Reghunath; vice-president Deeparani; and block panchayat member P.R. Mohandas.
They alleged that the contractors were not utilising the land acquired for road widening at Kulanada and this would lead to traffic bottleneck in future.
Mr. Reghunath said the matter had already been brought to the notice of the district authorities as well as Works Minister Mons Joseph.
He alleged that the contractors had been trying to retain only the previous tar width along the Kulanada stretch of MC Road and there was no question of permitting any manipulation in the name of road development.
KSTP authorities said the issue would be sorted out through discussion with the panchayat authorities soon.
