Decides on an all-party press meet
An all-party peace meeting convened by District Collector Rathan Kelkar here on Monday decided to hold further talks in the presence of Chief Minister Oommen Chandy or the Home Minister or any other Minister.
The peace meeting, presided over by Mr. Kelkar, saw representatives of political parties agree to the proposal to hold an all-party press meet in the presence of either the Chief Minister or the Ministers.
The meeting decided to strengthen police action to prevent untoward incidents in the district. It was also decided to hold taluk-level peace meetings in the presence of Circle Inspectors every month.
James Mathew, MLA, said that in the recent clashes at Taliparamba [between workers of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] and the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), the police had lodged 39 complaints and the number of accused on both sides totalled over 750.
Tension continued because of the failure to arrest the culprits.
IUML leader V.K. Abdul Kader Moulavi demanded that the police arrest all the accused and ensure exemplary punishment for them.
T.V. Rajesh, MLA, Congress leaders T.O. Mohanan and Martin George, and K.P. Sahadevan of the CPI(M) were present at the peace meeting.
