Speaker G. Karthikeyan on Sunday cautioned against the tendency of parents of contestants to meddle with the conduct of the school youth festival.

School youth festivals were meant to showcase the talents of the young students and parents had no role in the conduct of the festival, he said, expressing resentment over the tendency of the parents in the guise of extending support to their wards.

Mr. Karthikeyan was addressing the valedictory function of the 53rd District School Youth Festival at the Government Vocation Higher Secondary School at Kayyoor, where the event was being hosted since the New Year day.

He also flayed the tendency of harassing the students in case they failed to perform to the expected level.

In such cases, the matter should be gently handled by giving good counselling so that they get even more confidence to perform better next time, he said.

The Speaker called upon the authorities to include waning traditional art forms of Kerala in the competitions so that they could be kept alive for generations to come.

He lauded the efforts of the organising committee to showcase the events in a more organised way without giving room for complaints from any quarters.

Mr. Karthikeyan said due care should have been taken to avert unfortunate incidents such as the attack on media persons, following reports on food arrangement at the venue of the district youth festival in Thiruvananthapuram.

The function was attended by K. Kunhiraman, MLA, representing Thrikaripur, N. A. Nellikunnu, MLA, Kasaragod, District Panchayat President P. P. Shyamala Devi and district collector P. S. Mohammed Sagir.
