Consider it a social obligation, says District Collector

Nearly 35 grama panchayats do not have crematoriums

‘Haritha Keralam project should be made a success’

KOZHIKODE: District Collector P.B. Salim has said that grama panchayats not having crematoriums should take steps to construct them immediately.

He was speaking at a meeting of secretaries of grama panchayats, municipalities and Corporations and people’s representatives here on Thursday.

Nearly 35 grama panchayats and the Koyilandy municipality in the district do not have crematoriums.

Dr. Salim said that though there was opposition to acquisition of land for crematoriums in some areas, the panchayat authorities should take immediate steps to set up crematoriums, considering it a social obligation.

The Collector said the ‘Haritha Keralam’ project, organised by the Forest Department, in association with local bodies, should be made a success.

Special focus should be there to plant saplings in compounds of government and quasi-government institutions and ‘puramboke’ land. Efforts should be made to seek the cooperation of youth organisations and non-governmental organisations, he said.

Examples for planting

The saplings were being provided free of cost. Besides, expenses for planting would be borne by the Forest Department. The aim was to plant eight lakh saplings this season in the district.

Show-cause notices

Dr. Salim warned that show-cause notices would be issued to those secretaries of grama panchayats who did not take the saplings from the nurseries till Friday evening.
