KANNUR: The Kadambur grama panchayat limits will be declared garbage-free by Minister for Local Self-Government Paloli Mohamed Kutty here on October 22.

Panchayat president C.K. Rajan said at a press conference here on Friday that the local body had been taking up a total sanitation programme since August 15.

Public participation

He said students and merchants were involved in preparatory efforts to make the village garbage-free.

Voluntary organisations, local clubs and environmental activists cooperated. Ward-level neighbourhood committees had been formed and household campaigns and monitoring conducted, he said.

The inauguration of the drive was followed by cleaning of Anappalam area by 150 volunteers, including 70 college students.

The panchayat had conducted a household survey as part of the follow-up action.

An action plan had been prepared to ensure that sanitation activities were turned into a permanent garbage disposal system, he said.
