THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: State Election Commissioner P. Kamalkutty has disqualified an elected member of Karumkulam grama panchayat from contesting the election for six years for violating a whip issued by the party.

A commission release issued here on Thursday said that panchayat member N. Viswambharan, who was elected on the CPI(M) ticket, violated the whip issued by the party during the discussion on a no-confidence motion against the panchayat committee of the CPI(M).

The action was taken on the basis of a petition filed by a member G. Anil Kumar. He alleged that Mr. Viswambharan had flouted the whip issued by the party.
