State conference will discuss lifestyle diseases
The 39th annual State conference of the Indian Academy of Paediatrics (IAP) will be held here on November 6 and 7.
The conference will be inaugurated by Health Minister P.K. Sreemathy at a function to be presided over by IAP State president C. Jayakumar.
At the inaugural function, P.N.N. Pisharody will be installed as IAP State president for the coming year.
The motto of this year's conference is “keep diseases at bay through lifestyle changes”.
More than 500 delegates from the State and fifty paediatrics super specialists will be attending the conference.
Organising committee chairman B. Haridas said the IAP had a two-pronged aim.
One was to give thrust to continuing education and the other was to implement schemes with the government and non-governmental organisations for overall healthcare of children.
IAP district president M.C. Thomas said good habits and exercise were imperative for a generation of healthy children.
Obesity was the biggest contemporary paediatric problem.
Recipe to obesity
The habit of eating junk food while watching TV contributed to obesity.
Junk food consumption led to habitual constipation, and these health problems aggravate with an overload of studies.
Dr. Thomas said many children were finding it difficult to have their daily meals without meat. This was also not a healthy sign.
