Houseboat Owners Association general secretary N.Sreekumar said the package tours that make visit to countries like Malaysia and Singapore affordable, were the main reason behind the dip.
“People choose to visit a foreign country by spending more or less the same amount for visiting Kerala,” he said.
He said the increase in temperature along with the bad condition of roads in Munnar might have prompted domestic tourists to cancel their plans to visit Alappuzha. The Tourism Department should make efforts to woo the right segment of people to the tourist destinations of Kerala, he said.
Kerala Houseboat Owners Association president Jomon Konakkappally said airlines should bring down flying charges within the country. “Then only it will result in more tourist arrivals ,”he said.
Abi Arackal, president of the district unit of Kerala Homestay and Tourism Society, there is a slight decrease in the number of foreign tourists staying at homestays. Howeve, P.Subramanian, general manager of Marari Beach Resorts, said there is a steady flow of tourists this year also in April and May. “The rush of tourists especially from the Arab world will begin in June,” he added.
