KOCHI: Knowledge is the basis for all developing societies, said Gangan Prathap, Vice Chancellor, Cochin University of Science and Technology.

He was speaking after inaugurating the new showroom of the Oxford University Press at Panampilly Nagar here on Tuesday. Need for publishing quality material is an indicator of social progress of the country, he said.

On the occasion, a collection of women writing Five Novellas by Women Writers was also released.

Releasing the book, G.S. Jayasree, Director, Centre of Women Studies, University of Kerala, said that the works featured in the collection stand as representations of women writing as well as translations.

It also works towards re-writing the canons of gender discrimination existing in the society, Dr. Jayasree said.

The book features English translations of novellas titled Moonlight (Malayalam) by B.M. Zuhara, Defying Winter (Bengali) by Nabaneeta Dev Sen, Temple-fair (Kannada) by Vaidehi, Thereafter (Marathi) by Saniya and A Woman’s Farewell (Hindi) by Mrinal Pande.
