PALAKKAD: The industrial training institute (ITI) sanctioned by the State government at Ottappalam will start functioning on September 29 in the old Vaniyamkulam bungalow of the German missionary Herman Gundert who wrote the first Malayalam-English dictionary staying here in the early 1870s.

M. Hamza, Ottappalam MLA, said Excise and Labour Minister P.K. Gurudasan would inaugurate the institute.

He said the government had sanctioned Rs.3 crore in the State budget for starting the institute, out of which Rs.2 crore would be used for constructing a building on land to be allotted by the Vaniyamkulam panchayat.

Mr. Hamsa said the bungalow, still maintained by the Evangelical Mission, was of great historical importance.
