‘Orukkam,' the final preparatory programme for helping out academically backward students to take the SSLC examination, is nearing completion in the district.

Altogether, 120 schools are presently engaged in conducting the residential coaching programme designed by the district panchayat. The residential camps, which started in mid-February, will be wound up on March 13.

As part of the final round preparations, a special counselling programme is also offered to students with the support of a specially designed video programme, ‘Orukkam.'

The video, prepared by the local body, with the support of expert doctors, aims at bolstering the mental ability of students.

As many as 170 teachers are coordinating the final rounds of the programme.

The teachers, who had completed a two-day special training, will visit the learning camps on a rotational basis to help students. Guest lecturers too will chip in.

K.K. Sivadasan, coordinator, Kozhikode district panchayat Education Committee, said the final preparatory programme will also offer a special set of quick-reference materials to the students.

“Eight such study material sets have already been prepared,” he said. The education committee is expecting a major change this year in the performance of students taking the SSLC examinations, Mr. Sivadasan said.

The Vijayotsavam comprehensive education programme of the committee had utilised Rs.10 lakh to undertake innovative learning programmes in schools.

The committee, this time, had imparted training to over 640 selected students with behavioural disorders.

The programme, with the support of doctors and clinical psychologists, motivated even students who were addicted to alcohol and other such substances, he said.
