Thiruvananthapuram: Leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy has strongly reacted to BJP leader L.K. Advani’s statement that the UPA government is trying to appease minority communities by implementing the Sachar Commission recommendations.

In a statement here, Mr. Chandy said that the Centre was implementing the Sachar Commission recommendations to solve backwardness among the Muslim community. To depict an initiative that would provide relief to a community which had failed to get its due as communal appeasement was nothing but self-betrayal, Mr. Chandy said. It was the responsibility of the government to ensure social justice.
