Women in Kozhikode joined the rest of the world in the ‘One Billion rising’ campaign on Thursday by asserting their right to the earth and the sky.

The event received a heart-warming response by women’s groups in Kozhikode, who formed a collective, ‘Pennoruma.’ Artists Paul Kallanode and Kabitha Mukhopadhyay inaugurated a rally in the city by lending shape to their ideas on a canvas. Women from various walks of life assembled for a public meeting at Muthalakkulam, which was inaugurated by Sherly Vasu, writer and Head of the Department of Forensic Medicine, Government Medical College, Thrissur.

Dr. Vasu, in her address, flagged various turning points in the evolution of laws for the protection of women in India and abroad and hoped that ‘One Billion Rising’ would be a landmark in the women’s liberation movement the world over. A women’s ‘shinkarimelam,’ folk songs, and plays followed.
