Students of Government College, Malappuram, defeated their teachers in a tug-of-war competition organised as part of Onam celebrations on Wednesday.
There was flood of activities on the campus as part of the celebrations, with students and teachers rubbing shoulders to show off their zest.
The day-long festivities began with a flower carpet competition in which all the nine departments of the college took part.
The Department of Islamic History bagged the first prize in the competition judged by the teachers of the college.
The presence of a `Maveli' and his assistant not only added colour but also instilled fervour to the celebrations. They encouraged the students and joined them in every game they played.
The most exciting event of the day was the tug-of-war held between departments.
When the machos of Commerce Department tugged their friends of Arabic Department into submission in the final, cries of jubilation arose from a large group of students.
Women members too were equally zestful. The fiercest fight of women took place in the tug-of-war final when the students of Economics and Physics Departments locked horns in a best-of-three round.
The physics students put up an excellent show of strength before giving in to their economics friends.
Competitions in pot-breaking, lemon and spoon, slow cycling, musical hat, three-legged race and sack race brought in variety to the celebrations. Unmindful of the sporadic showers, the students and teachers turned the day into a memorable one.
