As many as 500 women workers under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) will be presented ‘Onakkodi' (Onam dress) at a function here on September 14.
Announcing this at a press conference here on Thursday, District Poverty Alleviation Unit project director P.V. Thomas said that Minister for Social Welfare and Panchayats M.K. Muneer would inaugurate the function at the Town Square at 3.30 p.m.
In 2012-13, of the Rs.5,797.45 lakh allotted for the national job gurantee scheme, Rs.5,728.82 lakh was utilised, including Rs.5,273.92 lakh as wages. A total of 92,477 families had been given jobs under the scheme and 34,67,752 workdays created, the said.
Of these families, 7,888 families had completed 100 mandays of employment, he said adding that they comprised 7,838 families which included women workers.
Mr. Thomas said that the Onakkodi would be presented to 500 the senior-most women workers. The rest of the women workers would be given a cheque of Rs.400 each at local-level functions, he added.
