The body of a nun, who was found hanging from a fan at a classroom attached to a convent at Eramaloor in the district on Thursday night, was handed over to her relatives by Friday evening after conducting post mortem at the Alappuzha general hospital.

The nun, identified as Suja Francis (37), of Karithara near Kumbalangi of Ernakulam district, was a resident of the Divya Karunya Bhavan, a convent under the Latin Catholic diocese of Kochi. The incident happened at 7.30 p.m., when other nuns at the convent had gone outside the room for prayer.

The police said that preliminary investigations prove that it was a case of suicide. Suja, who was working as a teacher at the Divya Karunya Bhavan convent school for the last six months, was often seen depressed. The police are investigating into the motives behind her suicide. Fr. Tomy, who was the vicar of Our Lady of Fathima Church and convent-in-charge said that she was happy till the moment of the incident. “She spoke very little and hence she was not ready to exchange her concern with others,” he said.

Kunjumon, relative of the deceased said that she had joined the convent six months ago after having served at Fort Kochi and Thoppumpady convents.
