The State government will approach the Centre for a Malayalam language study and research centre in the State capital now that Malayalam has been given the classical language status.

Such an institute is of much relevance and Minister of State for Human Resources Shashi Tharoor can help the State achieve it, it was said at a meeting convened by Chief Minister Oommen Chandy here on Tuesday. November 1, Kerala’s Foundation Day, will be observed as the Classical Language Day and special programmes will be organised in all government offices and schools to celebrate the day.

Culture Minister K.C. Joseph, film-maker Adoor Gopalakrishnan, writers Perumbadavam Sreedharan, George Onakkoor, and Puthusseri Ramachandran, and Culture Secretary Sheela Thomas were among those present at the meeting.
