Unfortunate that Chacko is chairing the panel on 2G scam: CPI leader
“I have serious apprehensions about the findings of the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) on 2G scam, considering the flawed direction in which the committee chairman P.C. Chacko was leading the investigation,” Communist Party of India (CPI) leader and Member of Parliament Gurudas Dasgupta said here on Wednesday.
Addressing mediapersons at the Kozhikode Press Club here, Mr. Dasgupta, who is also a member of the JPC said it was “unfortunate” that a person like Mr. Chacko was the chairman of the committee. “The sole intention of the chairman is to prove the CAG report on 2G scam wrong instead of making an independent investigation into the whole issue.”
The CPI leader said he was continuing with the committee as a member only out of respect for the responsibility entrusted upon him.
“Instead of trying to find what went wrong and how the national interest was affected in the whole deal, the investigation has turned out to be a mockery of the system,” said Mr. Dasgupta.
He criticised the way the Centre had dealt with the crisis of Indian expatriates in the Gulf countries, especially Saudi Arabia, in connection with its Nitaqat programme. If a large section of the population was opting to migrate for jobs that was a sign of the government’s failure. “But what will one do if the government is unmoved even when the migrants face a serious problem in the other country?” he asked.
On ‘third front’
Mr. Dasgupta said that no socialist parties, in the real sense of the term, existed today. Socialist nature and character was needed not in name but in deed. He added that though the idea of a ‘third front’ was still relevant there was no sign of it taking shape in a meaningful way.
