Footpaths in new roads will be constructed as per the specifications laid down by the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission and the National Transport Policy, said K.J. Sohan, chairman of the Town Planning Standing Committee of the Kochi Corporation.

The civic body will evolve a unified design and pattern for the existing footpaths in the city for roads owned by it.

The rectification works and improvements would be made with the support of sponsors, he said.

Agencies that own the roads are constructing the footpaths and repairing them independently and there is no coordination between the agencies.

Some government agencies had laid concrete slabs on drains and carried out beautification works by laying tiles over them.

These tiles and the slabs had to be removed for clearing the drains and removing the silt that have got accumulated in them. As a result, all the work done here would go down the drain, he said.
