Minister for Food and Civil Supplies T. M. Jacob has said that the State will not experience price rise during this Onam. He said that 20 lakh families coming under the Below Poverty Line will be given Onam kit worth Rs.90 free of cost in addition to the distribution of rice at Re.1.

Mr. Jacob was addressing a press conference after a meeting of a ministerial committee for the development of the district here on Thursday.

Union Defence Minister A.K. Antony will inaugurate the State-level launch of the distribution of rice under the Re.1 scheme in Nedumangad Assembly constituency on August 27. The Minister said that distribution of free Onam kit will cost the government Rs.19 crore. Stating that the prevailing scheme of supply of rice for Rs.2 will continue, Mr. Jacob said that the government was continuing with its schemes incurring huge subsidies.

Rice supplied by the Union government for the Above Poverty Line-cardholders for Rs.8.90 a kg was being distributed at Rs.2 while rice meant for distribution to BPL and AAY (Antyodaya Anna Yojana) cardholders at Rs.6.90 is to be given for Re.1.

Mr. Jacob said that steps will be taken to unify price at the Onam and Ramzan markets being operated by the Cooperation, Civil Supplies, and Agriculture Departments.

He said that making available essential commodities at uniform price will help check price rise in the open market.
