The National Highways (NHs) passing through the State have been renumbered as part of the ‘systematic numbering' of the NH stretches in the country by the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.
According to the Ministry, the decision to renumber the NHs was taken as the existing number like NH 47 did not give any indication of its location and direction.
The Union government has renumbered the NHs in exercise of the powers conferred on it under Section 2 of the National Highways Act of 1956. The stake-holders like the National Highways Authority of India, Border Road Organisation and the Public Works Department of all States have been asked to renumber the NHs.
With this, 218 NH stretches having a length of over 70,548 km across the country have been renumbered. NH 17, NH 47, NH 47A, NH 47C, NH 49, NH 212, NH 213, NH 208, NH 220 are the NHs passing through Kerala. The total length of the NHs passing through the State is 1,457 km.
As per a Central notification, the highway starting with NH 1 near Srinagar and passing through Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Devanhalli in Karnataka, Hosur, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri and Salem connecting Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu will be NH 44.
The highway starting from NH 44 near Salem connecting Coimbatore, Palakkad and Thrissur and terminating at its junction with NH 66 near Ernakulam will be henceforth NH 544.
NH 744 will be the highway starting with NH 44 near Tirumangalam connecting Srivilliputtur, Rajpalayam, Tenkasi, Puliyur in Tamil Nadu, Punalur and Kottarakara and terminating with NH 66 near Kollam. The highway starting from NH 44 near Kavalkinaru connecting Aralvaymozhi and terminating at its junction with NH 66 near Nagercoil will be NH 944.
NH 66 will now start with NH 48 near Panvel connecting Indapur, Mahad, Rajapur, Kudal in Maharashtra, Panaji and Margoa in Goa, Karwar, Honavar, Udupi, Mangalore in Karnataka, Kasaragod, Kannur, Ponnani, Edappalli, Ernakulam and Thiruvananthapuram and will terminate with NH 44 near Kanyakumari.
The highway beginning with NH 66 near Kozhikode connecting Kalpetta, Gundulpet and Mysore and terminating with NH 948 near Kollegal in Karnataka has been renumbered as NH 766. The highway commencing from NH 66 near Feroke and terminating at its junction with NH 544 near Palakkad will be henceforth NH 966.
The stretch of the highway starting with NH 544 near Kalamassery after crossing NH 66 and terminating at Vallarpadam will be NH 966A and the stretch from its junction with NH 66 and terminating at Willingdon Island will be NH 966B.
The highway starting with NH 83 near Dindigul connecting Teni, Uttamapalayam in Tamil Nadu, Kumily, Peermeedu, Kanjirapally, Kottayam and Adoor and terminating with NH 744 near Kottarakara will be NH 183.
The stretch of NH 66 near Kochi linking Ernakulam, Muvattupuzha, Devikulam, Teni, Madurai, Tiruppuvanam and other places and terminating at Tondi in Tamil Nadu has been renumbered as NH 85.
