Diabetic retinopathy is a key field in medical research, where positive changes occur very frequently. The way we manage diabetic retinopathy has changed immensely in the last few years and is still evolving rapidly. It is indeed a challenge for the retinal surgeon to keep in track with all the new developments of diabetic eye care. He needs to keep refreshing his knowledge on a yearly basis now as management strategies are evolving. The most important positive changes over the last few years have occurred in prevention of diabetic retinopathy, comprehensive diabetic eye care, OCT guided treatments, intravitreal injections, medicated intravitreal devices and sutureless vitrectomy surgery.
How can we prevent diabetic retinopathy?
The best way to prevent diabetic retinopathy is to prevent diabetes for which life style changes are required. In our stressful lifestyle with irregular food habits, it is very difficult to actually prevent diabetes. That is why diabetes is on the rise, as a major pandemic in India. The next best way is to have good tight control over the diabetic state. This means that the blood sugars, lipids, blood pressures, renal and cardiac status are well controlled by a diabetologist. Studies have shown that if we reduce the blood sugar and blood pressure, the progression of diabetic retinopathy will be slower.
