N.K. Rasheed, State council member of the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), was unanimously elected president of the district panchayat here on Wednesday.

He succeeds K.V. Sasi of the Congress who resigned last month to pave for the IUML to take over as per an understanding in the United Democratic Front.

Mr. Rasheed’s name was proposed by K.L. Poulose, district panchayat member and District Congress Committee president.

United Democratic Front member in the local body Prakash Chomady seconded the proposal.

District Collector K.G. Raju administered the oath of office to Mr. Rasheed at a function at the District Panchayat auditorium on the day.
