Deep-sea fishing project at Puthiappa harbour inaugurated

As many as 30 fish markets with modern facilities will be opened across the State shortly, Fisheries Minister K. Babu has said.

He was inaugurating the deep-sea fishing project at Puthiappa Fisheries Harbour here on Saturday. The Minister said 25 such markets had been sanctioned already. One of them would be in Payyoli in Kozhikode.

Each such market would cost Rs.2.5 crore and would be set up in local bodies which provided 50 cents of land for the purpose. Revenue from the fish markets would go to the local body concerned. The Minister also said the government had decided to encourage deep-sea fishing as a means to ease the financial hardships of the fishermen community. Modern facilities needed for deep-sea fishing would be made available to fishermen. The government would also be constructing more houses for fishermen.

In the next three years 8,000 houses would be built for the homeless among fishermen. A comprehensive development programme that would cost Rs.3, 000 crore and lay stress on drinking water supply and housing would also be implemented.
