KOCHI: The State government has approved and issued orders sanctioning the construction of a new building complex for the City Police.

The new building is being planned at the plot at Marine Drive, where the present office of the City Police Commissioner is situated. The three floors from the ground in the proposed 12-floor building will be marked out as commercial space.

The commercial area available in the new building will come up to 45,000 sq.ft. The rest of the building will house different offices related to the City Police, including the office of the City Police Commissioner.

The building will have parking facilities for nearly 400 vehicles and high security featuring armed guards. The building will have separate entrances to the commercial space and City Police offices.

The commercial space will be given out on lease for 30 years. The lease period could be extended to up to 90 years, subject to conditions, said an official press release issued from the office of the City Police Commissioner.

Preference will be given to banks and public sector units while leasing out the space in the building. Those interested will also have the option of making changes in interior design while the construction is going on, the release said. The City Police have finalised a schedule of completing the construction in nine months after laying the foundation stone in October.
