In a bid to help drivers adopt technically correct and safe driving practices, the Motor Vehicles Department (MVD) is planning to install light motor vehicle (LMV) simulators.
The simulator, which is to set new benchmarks in driving training by imparting scientifically designed lessons, is to set up at three places.
“The MVD has decided to install the LMV simulator at three places and initially train the drivers. The locations are being worked out,” an official said.
The simulators, each costing Rs.35 lakh, are being procured at a time when over 10 persons are killed daily in road accidents in the State and an intensive drive is on to curb the accident rate.
It has been found that the people taking licence hardly have proper knowledge of driving, which is leading to accidents. The majority of driving schools offer training in hand, feet and eye coordination at the wheel and day-time driving.
The simulator will teach how to drive safely during day and night and in a range of terrains and weather conditions and make the trainee aware of traffic rules. In the long run, the official said the simulators would reduce chances of road accidents.
Already, private driving schools and those under vehicle dealers have simulators. But, the facility is not being properly used by the instructors to train the drivers.
Designed to look like a prototype of a car with dashboard, brake, accelerator, steering, clutch and gear, and rear viewing facility, the simulator offers real-life experience in regular and adverse conditions.
While the visual experience is offered by high resolution LCD placed before the driver, synchronisation of sound and action for all activities of engine, gear changing, clutch, accelerator, crash braking and tyre burst provide a high degree of realism. Eye tracking and head tracking will be carried out for the assessment of the driver.
The simulator will be configured with a driver station for continuous monitoring of driving habits and to point out errors. A detailed performance evaluation report can be obtained at the end of each session.
The facility will be integrated with the database of the MVD and web-based application will be provided.
