Anil Das had gone absconding; other accused convicted in 2000

A district court here on Wednesday sentenced to life imprisonment a 35-year-old man in connection with the murder of an undertrial, Kabeer alias LTTE Kabeer, in a crude bomb attack in front of the Sub-Jail at Attakulangara on July 17, 1999.

Fast Track Court judge S. Madhavan found the man, Anil Das alias Jeerakam Ani, of having assisted Sathar, who was convicted in the case in 2000, to kill Kabeer.

The prosecution case was that one Channankara Sulaiman, a businessman, had contracted a Vallakkadavu-based criminal gang headed by Farooq alias Karate Farooq to kill Kabeer, with whom he had a long-standing enmity. The Supreme Court later acquitted Sulaiman, but upheld the sentence of the rest of the accused. The police case was that Farooq had fashioned the powerful explosive, which shattered Kabeer’s head on impact. Two policemen, who were escorting him, were injured in the attack. Farooq is serving a life sentence in the case. All the accused in the case were arrested in 1999. However, Anil Das gave the slip and hid in Bangalore, where he worked as a manual labourer in market places. He surrendered before a magistrate here in 2006.
