KOCHI: Minister for Fisheries S. Sarma has assured the Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA) that the land identified by the authority at Shakthikulangara, near Kollam, will be handed over to it soon to set up a pre-processing unit for peeling workers. The Minister was speaking to MPEDA officials on his visit to the authority office here recently.

The Minister also said that the hygienic conditions set by MPEDA would be met when new fish landing centres were set up. Mr. Sarma said a joint effort was needed to tap the resources available in the State and improve exports and increase the number of jobs created in the marine sector, said a press release from MPEDA here.

He said a coordination committee of fisheries organisations would be formed to look at the problem of declining export of marine food from the State. The Minister also appreciated the efforts made by MPEDA in upgrading the landing centres in the State.

Chairman of MPEDA G. Mohankumar made a presentation on seafood exports, especially with reference to Kerala. He said that there was a need to upgrade the landing centres and achieve high standards.
